Owner
Hello, my name is Jennell.
Some call me Nelly. Now you may be wondering, why did I start this business?
-
I absolutely LOVE creating things. As a kid, I can remember creating ʻmagic herbal medicine' out of plants in my grandparent's yard. I was one of those kids who'd make mudpies, garden with my grandfather, make leis for fun, repurpose my clothes, and build forts and castles out of used boxes and toilet paper rolls. As I grew up, I learned about crafting, such as scrapbooking, crocheting, making things out of resin, and more recently, sewing. Each time I found something that allowed the creative part of me shine, it became an obsession and I was determined to learn as much as I could about them to perfect my craft. I found that it genuinely brings me joy and acts as a therapeutic activity. Eventually, I looked into DIY crafts and started making my own scrunchies, coasters, bookmarks, jewelry boxes, and helping my friends sew some clothes together. Now, I am determined to make my own clothes, accessories, clothes for my family and friends, and even dabble in household goods.
- I wanted to be my own boss & I love running a business. Many people may think it's crazy to enjoy every aspect of running a business, but I truly do. I never liked working for others. How did I learn how to start a business? Like most people, I just looked it up. It all started when I'd resell used clothes on my boutique account on instagram. I found it satisfying when I'd make a sale and connect with others. In college, I did not pursue a business degree, but starting a business was always in the back of my mind and I decided to take a few business classes. Those classes gave me the confidence to start selling things again. I started off making resin products and selling them through instagram at the peak of COVID, while also working my part-time job and going to school full-time. After I got married, moved, and got pregnant, I took a break due to the chemical exposure with resin items. Unfortunately, I lost my son half way through my pregnancy and struggled with depression.
One day, I came across crafting videos and it inspired me to get back into my crafts. I bought a sewing machine and started making scrunchies. I bought a heat press and started ironing designs to tote bags, apparel, and eventually making custom items for friends and family. I slowly worked my way out of depression and realized how short and precious life is. I decided to take the leap and make it official. I registered my business, trademarked my business name (which I'll talk about below) & launched my first website. It was surreal to see orders coming in, to talk about something meaningful, and to create things I took pride in. I took another break after falling pregnant again, moving back home, and giving birth to my beautiful baby girl. I wanted to be entirely present in the first year of her life and soak up every little moment. Now that she is one, she's more independent at play time and doesn't depend on just breastmilk as a source of nutrition, I started dabbling in my crafts again and looked into restarting my business.
I began rebranding and creating items that I believe are useful, cute, and/or can be repurposed. As someone who was born and raised in Hawaiian culture, I valued and prioritized sustainability and eco-friendly methods and practices. Naturally, I implemented those values into my brand. Everything my brand offers will be made from natural elements, from the products itself, to the packaging, to the supplies used. They are also made to be recycled and repurposed, as we aim to minimize waste.
Now as you see, I joined one of my biggest passions in life with another passion and that is how heavenlyychild came to be.
The Name
A lot of people ask me how I chose the name for my business. I simply chose my middle name, 'Keikilani,' which directly translates to 'heavenly child' or 'child of the heavens.' Why are there 2 y's? Many of you may have thought it was a typo, but it is purposeful. When I sold resin products, I chose the name heavenlychild, with just the one 'y.' After I lost my son, Koaliʻi, I added the extra 'y' as dedication to him. It can represent a 'Y' chromosome, but also the double I's in his name.
